4 Things to Consider When Moving Into A New Neighborhood

Moving into a new neighborhood can feel exciting (and stressful) for the whole family. This place will be your home! So, outside of knowing how to navigate the area, you’ll also want to feel comfortable.

That means not only considering a neighborhood that’s conducive for raising your kids, but also a town/city/subdivision etc. that embodies your ideal lifestyle or interests.

Whether this is your first move, or you’ve moved many times before, here are a few things to consider when you’re headed to a new neighborhood.

Cost of Housing

Before even considering the neighborhood, take into account housing costs. The house is presumably the primary factor you moved to a particular area. So, compare and contrast your prospective new home to your current home. Think about things like mortgages, leasing, and housing affordability. You should also consider whether you want to rent or buy a house, and if so, whether those costs are within your means.

After determining the housing price, you can begin to plan your move. (PS: It’s best to contact moving companies as early as possible to avoid delays and properly budget for these services.)

The Neighborhood’s Demeanor and Ambience

Like people, your neighborhood can have its unique character and vibe. Some neighborhoods are fun, friendly, and full of life, especially if most occupants are young. On the other hand, if you choose to live in a more traditional neighborhood—especially one where the population is generally older—expect it to be less energetic than the former.

If you want to get a better sense of ambiance and character, consider viewing all sorts of homes: condos, single-family units, and apartments. This will help you to see the differences between housing areas. It will also guide you into knowing where your family best fits!

As you visit different homes, be sure to check out the surrounding areas, too! Parks, beaches/public areas, bars, nightclubs, grocery stores, and coffee shops nearby can make your new place feel like home.

Keeping your kids in mind, think about proximity to attractions and other activities to do with your kids as well. For example: amusement parks, circuses, movie theatres, libraries, art exhibitions, and museums.

Security and Crime Rates

Oftentimes, we’re drawn to neighborhoods because of the culture and vibe. While these factors may seem enticing, make sure that safety is top-of-mind as well!

Some neighborhood parts may seem appealing during the day but become dangerous or wild at night. Moving to an unsafe neighborhood is not worth the risk.

To learn about the safety of a neighborhood, ask the locals, read message boards or Facebook groups, and talk to your realtor. You can also contact the local police department to learn about the safety ratings of the neighborhood and its crime rates.

Sports and Recreational Facilities

Sports and recreational activities are huge, especially if you’re moving to a new neighborhood and looking to get active and involved!

Research the available facilities in the neighborhood, like sports clubs, YMCA programs, and/or fitness gyms and join them if you wish to do so. Getting involved and active in your neighborhood is a great way to meet and make new friends.

Ready to Move?

If you’re relocating, one of the best things you can do for your family is figure out where you best ‘fit.’

Moving into a new neighborhood can seem overwhelming, but if you take the steps to find an ideal place, get comfortable, and get involved, your family will feel at home in no time!
