3 Ways To Help Your Child Excel in School

child being successful in school

As a parent, it’s natural to want to help your child excel in school. But sometimes this isn’t easy as every child learns differently, education is not one-size-fits-all, and sometimes your child(ren) may have other challenges that make learning more difficult. When I became a parent, I was super committed to figuring out what would work best for my son to learn, especially because he has dyslexia and traditional education doesn’t always align with his needs.

As I learned more about my son, and as I investigated my own role as both a teacher/business owner and mom, I found that there were things that worked. . . and things that didn’t. While each child truly is unique and something that works for one might not work for another, here are a few small ways to help your child build a strong academic foundation.

1. Strong Study Habits

One of the most important things you can do to help your child excel in school is to help them develop a good study habit for tests, speeches, or even everyday homework assignments! This means setting aside time each day for studying and making sure they stick to it. This may be tough at first, but creating a routine will pay off in the long run!

Here are a few ways you can foster good study habits:

  • Make sure they have a dedicated study space. This should be a quiet place where they can focus on their work without distractions.
  • Establish regular study times. This will help your child build consistency and responsibility.
  • Help them create a study plan. This will outline what they need to study each day and week and help them stay on track.
  • Encourage them to take breaks. Studying for hours on end can be counterproductive, so make sure your child takes regular breaks to relax and recharge.

By helping your child develop strong studying methods and routines, you’ll be giving them a huge advantage in school!

2. Tutoring

If your child is struggling in a particular subject, individualized tutoring can be a great way to help them catch up. A good tutor will customize their teaching style to match your child’s learning needs, which can make a big difference in their success. There are several different types of tutoring available, so it’s important to find the right one for your child.

Some popular options include:

  • Private Tutoring: This type of tutoring is usually done one-on-one with a tutor of your choice. It can be expensive, but it offers lots of flexibility and customization.
  • Group Tutoring: This type of tutoring takes place in a small group setting and is often cheaper than private tutoring. It can be an excellent option for kids who learn best in a collaborative environment.
  • Online Tutoring: This type of tutoring is done via the internet and is a great option for students who live far from a tutor or need extra flexibility.

No matter what type of tutoring your child chooses, it can be a great way to help them catch up in school and get ahead.

3. A Good Night’s Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for students of all ages. It helps them stay focused and alert in class and can improve their academic performance. There are several things you can do to help your child get a good night’s sleep:

  • Set a bedtime curfew. This will help your child develop a regular sleep schedule.
  • Establish a bedtime routine. This will help your child relax and prepare for bed.
  • Make sure their bedroom is dark and quiet. This will help them fall asleep faster and get a better night’s sleep.
  • Limit screen time before bed. Watching TV or using electronic devices before bed can disrupt your child’s sleep cycle.

This list is, of course, not comprehensive by any means. . . but it can be the first stepping stones to helping your child excel in school and feel more confident in their learning. As a parent, you are the primary role model for priotizing education and what’s important, and by you making studying and learning a priority, it will encourage your child to do so also!
