As a bonus mom of a teenager, I’m always looking for fun, engaging, and creative things to do with my son that aren’t “mid” (as the kids say these days). When I was invited to the Pre-Opening for the Museum of Illusions San Diego, I was thrilled because this is an all-ages, interactive, and visually stimulating experience that would be exciting for us both! And *spoiler alert* it was amazing!
Whether you’re a mom of a teenager like me and looking for something different to do this summer, a big family hoping for an all-ages event, or even considering the MOI for a date night—or anything in between—the Museum of Illusions San Diego is an amazing spot!

About the Museum of Illusions San Diego
The MOI is two stories of exhibits, illusions, and art installations that will captivate the 10-second attention spans of your unruly teenagers and two-year-olds alike! 😜
The museum focuses on illusions (visual, physical, and sensory) that are intended to ‘bend reality’ and make you question both your perceptions and interpretations.
An illusion is defined as a deception of your brain. In essence, what you experience isn’t easily processed, and therefore your brain interprets it in a way that it can understand. . . which lends to a discrepancy between what’s perceived and actually real.
So, whether you’re a little kid trying to piece together a puzzle or a teenager challenging the limits of your mind, it’s easy to see why a place like the Museum of Illusions can be so fun!
MOI Exhibits, Installations & Must-Sees
There are so many different areas to explore at the MOI. Because Austin and I had the privilege of going before anyone else, we got to take our time at each part of the museum, including some additional fun with magicians and a guided tour to learn how each illusion worked!
Among some of our favorites were the rooms with mind-bending visuals where you could say ‘hi’ to yourself in multiple dimensions (pictured above). Or, my personal favorite – below! – the mirrored image where parts of Austin’s & my face blended to create a whole new and interesting character 😭😂.
The museum also has a hands-on section where you can try some puzzles on your own. This was probably Austin’s best-worst part of the experience because, as a visual and kinesthetic learner, he had to figure out how the puzzles worked!
We actually spent about 30-40 minutes just in this section because he wanted to figure out the puzzle on his own. (Admittedly, I gave up after 15 minutes!), but he pushed through until he got it!
If you have kids—ideally elementary-aged and above—they will really like this section because the manipulation of the different pieces can be both challenging and engaging (as long as you don’t get frustrated like me!).

Visiting the Museum Of Illusions
- Tickets: You need a ticket to visit the MOI unless you’re a child 4 years old or younger. [🔗 Buy tickets here!]
Purchase your ticket(s) in advance to avoid getting there and having your timeslot(s) sold out.
Note: Everyone needs a reserved timeslot (even ages 4 and below).
- Adult: $35 per person
- Child: $30 per person (age 5+)*
- Military/Senior: $32 per person
- Location: 📍665 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101
- Hours: Sun-Thurs 10AM-10PM | Fri-Sat 10AM-11PM
- Timeframe: I’d recommend planning for a minimum of 1-1.5 hours at the museum, depending on whether you like to read and understand the illusions or just browse leisurely.
MOI Logistics & Fun!
- Commuting: If you’re planning on commuting to the Museum of Illusions, you can take the trolley, exit at “Fifth Avenue,” and walk about 0.3 miles.
- Driving/Parking: I wouldn’t necessarily recommend driving because parking is very limited; however, if there is valet available, I would suggest that! If there isn’t valet parking available, then there are a few parking locations nearby. [Ace Parking at 614 Market St. or 702 Market St., or Seaport Village Parking at 849 West Harbor Drive].
