Winter Fashion: Dressing For Cold Weather

Depending on where you live, the winter months can feel like they drag on and on. The mornings are cold, evenings are even chillier, and the commute to and from work or activities can seem gray and dreary. It all feels endless. . . but winter doesn’t have to be a time you hate! Whether you enjoy getting dressed up or not, finding ways to embrace winter fashion and dress warm (yet trendy!) for the colder months is a must.

Here are some winter fashion trends and tips for staying warm (but still looking your best).

Tip 1: Layer Up

Obvious but still worth noting, a good way to maintain warmth in the winter is to make sure that you are layering up your clothing. One to two layers should be your absolute minimum, with silk underclothes and/or wool turtlenecks if you plan to spend time outside.

But, don’t just layer with anything—consider the material!

Moisture-wicking basics will mean you stay warm without overheating. As far as an outer layer, opting for something like a thick parka or a winter coat will give you a barrier against the cold temperatures, wind and rain. While cropped coats may look good on the shelf, if you want to stay warm, you should ensure that you are using the longer coats instead. Longer coats cover more surface of the body, and if you live in a place with snow, it will ensure that no snow sneaks into the crevices of your shirts or pants.

Tip 2: Ensure The Right Fit

Make sure that your clothes fit you comfortably. Tight clothing, as opposed to loose or baggy, will help you feel warm, but make sure that you’re not in something so tight you’re restricted. If you’re not a big fan of tight clothing, consider creating a contrast of tight and loose, for example skinny jeans with oversized knitted jumpers/sweaters and chunky boots.

Oh, and winter fashion tip—find the warmest thermal socks and wear them sticking out of your boots!

Tip 3: Don’t Shy Away From Your Favorites

Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite clothing items! While you might not want to wear a skirt by itself,  you can easily pair a cute skirt with knitted tights, low-heel boots and a cable knit pullover. You can also wear a short-sleeve (or even a tank-top) paired with layered sweaters and/or a scarf. You can even rock your favorite summer dress. . . just with leggings underneath!

Tip 4: Wear The Right Material

Here’s a winter fashion tip you can’t forget: invest in wool clothing! Wool is moisture-wicking, so it keeps you both warm and dry. If you find it itches (as some people say), choose cashmere over other wool types. Cashmere is super soft, will keep you cozy, and it works well whether you are at work or out and about. Throw on a comfortable beanie and you’re good to go.

While wool is in for winter, cotton is out. It’s a good idea to keep the cotton for the summer simply because it holds a LOT of water. This means if you happen to get into snow or sweat with all of your layers, you’ll immediately feel cool rather than warm.

Tip 5: Rock A Statement Piece

Winter fashion is all about making a statement (even though you’re cold). One of the easiest ways to do this is with a statement jacket, scarf, pair of shoes/boots, or hat. While you can’t necessarily show off all the normal trends and fits that you do during warmer months, the cold season gives you a chance to feature something else from your closet! So, go for bold, colorful, fuzzy, fluffy, or fun!

Tip 6: Be Smart About Footwear

With snow, ice, and chilly temps, it’s important to have the right footwear. While you might want to rock heels or cute booties where your bare toes stick out. . . just don’t! Make sure that your shoes have good grip, aren’t too thin or open-toed, and if you plan on walking around or being in snow, consider layering your socks.
