4 Simple Ways To Beef Up Your Resume

Your resume is what employers will look at when you’re job searching, yes. But just because you found a job you like doesn’t mean you should toss your resume to the side! Continually updating your resume and ensuring that it’s the best representation of you is important.

Not only will this allow you to continue to climb professionally (if need be) but you’ll be prepared to step into a more lucrative career or leverage your skills if and when the opportunity arises! Here are a few suggestions to create (and continually update!) your resume.

Take What Opportunities You Can To ‘Level Up’

First and foremost, be willing to do more than just the bare minimum at your current position. There will likely be times when you have joint projects or other opportunities when you are given the chance to step up and take on some extra duties (temporarily!) that your manager or boss is looking to delegate.

This can be your chance to not only learn and showcase skills that you don’t normally get to, but it can also open the opportunity for further professional growth! And, you can put this on your resume, too. (Just make sure you’re not taking on too many permanent new duties without talk of the pay to go with it.)

Note Your Biggest Achievements

If you excel within a project or deliver in a way that goes above and beyond the usual performance expected of your role, then you should make note of it.

If your achievement comes with quantifiable metrics, then it can make for precisely the kind of story that employers love to hear during the interview process. It can be difficult to demonstrate expertise and excellent performance without a few anecdotes with the numbers to really back them up, so when this happens be sure to note it on your resume. This way you can easily talk about it in the future at an interview or other professional setting.

Ask For Career Development Help

Good employers know that if they want to keep their team members around, they are going to have to invest in them. As such, you shouldn’t be afraid to bring up the prospect of career development with your boss. Be willing to ask for things like access to production training if you’re working in a manufacturing job, for instance. It’s a great way to get access to new skills and formal qualifications, and it could make them take you more seriously for internal advancement opportunities, as well.

Look For Other Ways To Beef Up Your Resume

Not every step that you take to improve your resume needs to be done within your job itself. You can also look at opportunities to improve your networking outside of the business, like volunteering positions (if you have time for them). There is also the prospect of getting more education beyond the workplace. If your workplace isn’t offering the skills and development you need, then you will have to find them elsewhere. While this may feel like a burden, continuing education can only add benefits to your career (in your current position and future!).

It’s important to be mindful of your position, and not to show your ambition to keep climbing too nakedly to employers. Make it clear you have career plans that they can help you build internally, but always keep your eye out on the horizon, as well.
