Whether you’re moving for the 5th time or the 500th time, the process of getting prepared, packed, and into a new home can feel overwhelming. While you’re focused on the big things, sometimes the smaller things can get skipped. But, with a little preparation and planning, you can avoid some of the most overlooked steps when moving and make your process easier (and more fun!).
1. Start By Redirecting Your Mail
With all the paperwork that is involved in buying a house and navigating the legal side of moving home, things can get stressful. As a result, some of simple tasks are often forgotten. One of these tasks most commonly skipped is redirecting your mail.
It’s important to remember that the postal service will continue to send mail to your old address unless you do something to change it. This means that whether it’s your insurance company, bank, or secret admirer. . . they’ll have the old address. . . unless you make a change.
The good news? This will only take a few minutes but it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
2. Update Utilities and Services
Another thing that is often overlooked is canceling or updating your utilities. Make sure that your electricity, internet, TV subscriptions and water are paid for or disconnected.
You should arrange for your final reading, and then you can confirm the services are disconnected in a timely manner. The last thing you want is to be billed for services that you are no longer using!
3. Check Out Your New Neighborhood
It’s so easy to get caught up in the logistics of moving that you forget about exploring the new place! You should take the time to research all the local services such as schools, doctors and transportation. (You’ll want to do this ahead of moving day!)
Getting familiar with the neighborhood is going to help you to feel a lot more settled once you arrive. This also means you know where to go for your essentials without having any unnecessary stress.
Focus On The Small Steps
Some of the most overlooked steps when moving are often the smallest or easiest. It’s important to remember that the little things can suddenly become a big hassle when they are not taken care of. By ensuring that your utilities, mail and even your neighborhood research is done ahead of time, you’ll feel a lot more confident and prepared!
This way, when you do move in, you’ll be able to relax, enjoy, and settle down.
