What Homeowners Can Do to Boost the Security of Their Garage

When it comes to modernizing your home, what usually comes to mind is aesthetics, right? Maybe planting or adding some indoor houseplants, doing a paint upgrade, or even adding smart home technology here and there. But thinking about how you can boost the security of your home doesn’t always come to mind. Sure, there are cameras you can add, or smart doorbells.

But what about your garage?

Your garage is more than just a place to park your car or store your tools. It’s an extension of your home. It often has valuable items (tools, storage items, clothing, toys, outdoor machines, etc.) but it also offers potential access to the main house.

Securing your garage is just as important as securing your front door! Here are some tips:

Install a High-Quality Garage Door

Similar to your front door, your garage door is the first line of defense for your garage. Check out your current garage door: Is it reliable? Is it outdated? If you’re answering yes to both of these, then you should consider looking into garage door services. They can either repair your door or install a whole new door that’s stronger and sturdier.

When you’re ready to make the upgrade, look for doors made from durable materials such as steel or solid wood, which are more resistant to break-ins. If you’re hiring a person/company, they’ll help you choose the best one (and yes, it can still be aesthetically pleasing!).

Upgrade Your Locks

While it may seem obvious, there are a lot of homeowners out there who overlook the importance of strong locks for their garages. Sure, everyone knows the importance of a front and back door, but it’s just as important for your garage, too.

If your garage door still uses the standard lock that came with it, consider upgrading to a more secure option. Deadbolt locks and smart locks are excellent choices- for the most part, they’re not expensive and you can even buy these on Amazon. For detached garages, adding a padlock with a thick shackle to the door can deter would-be intruders.

Add Motion-Activated Lighting

Are there any dark corners around your garage? Any shadows? Well, these are perfect for burglars! So, that’s exactly why installing motion-activated lights around your garage can deter potential intruders by illuminating their movements. It won’t 100% prevent break-ins, of course but it will help a lot. But you’ll need to place these lights at all entry points and along the driveway.

These are just a few suggestions to boost the security of your garage and home. Remember, your home—and you!— should be protected.
