If you’re a mom, stepmom, bonus mom, etc., chances are, you’re pretty selfless. Whether you’ve been a parent for years or are just starting out on your journey, it’s pretty natural to put the needs of your child(ren) above your own. . . sometimes to your own detriment. Oftentimes, it’s hard it find ways to treat yourself, especially if you’re busy (or, let’s face it, just not used to doing this!) But, something I’ve learned on my journey—and something every single parent needs to prioritize—is the importance of giving to yourself.
As they say, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
And honestly, that’s so true. While it might feel noble to think about everyone else’s needs and desires, it’s not necessarily the best strategy. Truthfully, learning to treat yourself not only benefits you, but everyone around you. After all, when you feel refreshed, restored, and energized, then it’s much easier to be the best version of yourself — and that’s something you and your family deserves.
So, how do you do it? First, remember that you don’t need an excuse to treat yourself. You just need to lean in! Here are a few ideas:
1. Seek Quiet Moments By Yourself
Spending time alone might not sound exciting, but if you’re touched out and/or burnt out, it can make a huge difference! When you’re continually jugging kid(s), work, relationships, and a household, you know all too well just how valuable some alone time can be. And it’s often hard to get!
Many of us fill our spare moments with tasks because, well, there’s always something to do! But there’s value in using the time you have alone and/or to rest to take a long bath, exercise, journal, or watch a movie on the couch. The chores will always be there; the moments to treat yourself may not be.
2. Indulge In A Spa Treatment
Of all the ways to treat yourself, there’s arguably none better than treating yourself to a day at the spa, which can offer a wide range of benefits. Premium spa treatments, such as massages or facials, help to reduce stress, boost mood, enhance skin health, and simply leave you feeling refreshed, recharged, and rejuvenated. You’ll leave your treatment feeling much better and unless you book full-day experiences, it’ll only require an hour or two of your time.
If a spa isn’t in your budget, you can also pamper yourself with something a little less expensive, like a haircut, blow out, or mani/pedi!
3. Go On A Staycation
Many people think that in order to ‘treat yourself’ you have to splurge on an expensive vacation. While that works (I won’t knock it!), you can also have just as much fun staying local.
Many people overlook all the possibilities that their home city allows. If you have a free day, why not play tourist? Spending the day exploring local attractions, eating delicious meal(s), or even bar hopping can give you the mental and social reset you need.
4. Finally Make That Purchase
So there’s no arguing that the cost of living is increasing day by day. While it can sometimes feel like you’ll never get ahead—and it’s good to be cautious when it comes to your budget, of course—it’s also important to not make finances the ruler of your happiness.
Sometimes there are things you really care about, whether a shirt, concert ticket, or trinket. . . and it’s ok to pull the trigger! You can be financially responsible, while also splurging from time to time. So, if there’s something you’ve been going back and forth on, don’t be afraid to say yes sometimes!
TLDR: Being a parent doesn’t mean that you put yourself on the backburner all the time. Yes, you will need to put your kids first (often) but that doesn’t mean you can—or should—neglect yourself in the process. Start with small steps to treat yourself and as you grow in your journey, your time and prioritization of self-love and self-care will grow, too!
