If you’re a homeowner, you know the struggle! There is always something to keep track of, to fix, or to do to improve your home. And, when you’re a parent, you’re often pulled between these responsibilities and all of the day-to-day tasks in raising your children, too.
Although you wouldn’t change your life for anything, it’s important to keep a balance. In your everyday grind, it’s easy to let things slip through the cracks! But, you don’t want to neglect these three vital things when it comes to home ownership:
1. Protect Property Foundations
Be honest; have you ever thought about your home’s foundations? Probably not, and you aren’t alone. Most homeowners fail to think about foundations until they notice warning signs like cracks, gaps, and water intrusion. But emergency foundational procedures can be costly, especially if issues relate to complications from tree roots or other elements nearby.
Proactive foundational protections are a much better option, and will most often include things like root barrier services. Protecting your property structures, preventing costly repairs, and promoting sustainable landscaping are just a few of the benefits of root barrier services. And, they’re probably worth considering if there are trees nearby, regardless of whether you’re directly worried about your foundations right now or not.
2. Regularly Clear Drains
Most homeowners neglect their drains. Let’s be honest: Even if you’re experiencing minor signs like slow drainage, you might simply ignore it and move on with your day. (Yikes!) In truth, though, blocked drains are one of the biggest causes of burst pipes and major water issues in the home. So, overlooking this issue can be incredibly expensive.
If you suspect drainage problems (due to slow drainage, smells, etc.), then a professional drain survey is definitely best, and this is something you should invest in annually as standard. Outside of that, many homeowners are surprised to hear that they should also clear their drains manually at least once a week. Simply pouring down a mixture of bicarb and vinegar, or even a boiling kettle of water, can help to keep things moving.
3. Service Your Appliances
We all know that we should have appliances like boilers and HVAC systems serviced annually, but many of us either overlook this priority or assume that yearly just isn’t necessary. You may service your appliances every two years instead, or perhaps less than that.
Unfortunately, the parts of heavy-use appliances need regular professional attention to stay in working order. Without this regular service, you face the risk of needing to replace the entire system. You also face deeper-seated household risks, like an increased risk of fire, poor air quality, and even the threat of carbon monoxide. All of these issues can become catastrophic, and they are all easily avoidable with a simple servicing schedule.
You may consider yourself a diligent homeowner, but are you also guilty of overlooking these essential tasks?
