Steps To Help You Expand your Career Options

Do you feel like your career is stagnating? If so, then now is the time for you to take action! To be honest, you’re never stuck. No matter how old your are, what your path has looked like, or even how many mistakes you’ve made along the way—it’s never too late to begin again. Whether you’re completely pivoting or just need to get “unstuck,” here are a few tips to help you expand your career options.

Get Curious

If you want to expand your career options, the first thing you need to do is get curious! For example, ask yourself these questions about potential jobs of interest: Would I make a good pharmacist? What does a graphic designer do all day? What would it be like to be a VA and help people all day? etc., etc.

Getting curious opens the door to exploration, and the more explore, the more you learn! In no time, you’ll be headed in your new direction!

Keeping curiosity in mind, it’s also a good idea to look into positions that reflect your interests, too. If you are, for example, considering becoming a virtual medical assistant, you’ll want to understand the range of responsibilities and ensure that the job description matches what you’re hoping to do.

Explore Jobs

Another thing you can try to do is explore all the different jobs in your area! Start with local opportunities. See if the places around you that are hiring are of interest and/or are a good fit. By doing this, you can also get a feel for what the job requires from a qualification point of view.

If you really want to expand your career options, don’t just limit your search to what’s local! You can also find jobs online through Google searches, reading Care.com reviews, or even scouring resources like LinkedIn for employment prospects and information. Make sure that you are expiring more traditional forms of job advertisement by taking note of anything that might be listed in newspapers, on billboards, or in magazines. The idea is to expand your choices!

Work with a Career Coach

Another thing you can do is try and work with a career coach. When you do work with a coach, you will find that they can guide you through everything you need to know. They can also work with you to make sure that you are aware of how your career trajectory may change and if there is anything you can do to boost your chances of getting hired.

Remember, if you do want to go into a new career, there will be a lot of hurdles to overcome. You will also need to deal with a lot of interviews! If you want to stand out from the crowd, a career coach can help you prepare for questions and even do mock interviews with you!

Volunteer Your Time

Another thing you can do to expand your career options is to try and volunteer! Volunteering gives you work experience, responsbility, owernship, and it’s an incredible way to give back to your community.

You will also find that you can get some hands-on experience of what the job is like (especially if you volunteer in your potential career field!) and if there is anything you can do to boost your chances of success. On the flip side, if you volunteer and find that the job is not for you, then there is nothing wrong with this! Just pivot, pursue a new direction, and keep going.

While volunteering is great experience for you and your job experience, it is, of course, great for the people/businesses you’re serving! So, even if it doesn’t work out in the long-term, know that you’re helping others, doing the right thing, and learning every step of the way.

TLDR, there are so many ways you can expand your career options. The most important thing is to not settle for anything less than what feels right. The road might be bumpy, but it’s worth it!
