Business Safety Tips For The Mama & Small-Biz Owner

Being both a parent and small business owner means navigating and balancing two parts of yourself—two parts that are often (if we’re being honest) equal importance—because success in one undoubtedly leads to success in the other. However, something that’s often overlooked when running a small business is safety. When you start your own business, you’re primarily focused on creating something sustainable and profitable in the long-term. More often than not, unfortunately, some important elements get skipped.

Whether you’ve been in business for years or are just starting, here are some business safety tips to keep you not only afloat, but up-to-code and on track for the long-term.

Respect Client Confidentiality

One of the most basic business safety tips: maintaining client confidentiality! This is the one thing all businesses are expected to do, and if it isn’t a priority for you (yet) it should be.

If people come to you with their details, including their names and email addresses, you should be doing everything you can to keep things private. Creating an email opt-in, sharing important information about cookies and data you collect, and investing in cybersecurity are the best ways to keep such details safe. Don’t keep details for longer than you need and make sure you generate a strong password for the secure server you’re planning to use.

Prioritize Employee Comfort

If you have employees, be sure that respecting and keeping their needs top-of-mind is one of your biggest priorities. If you don’t have employees, treat your independent contractors and/or anyone you hire with the same respect as you would someone employed full-time. (And PS: It’s also a best practice to do this for your clients, too!)

Prioritizing employee comfort means knowing what your team needs to feel successful and how you can facilitate their comfort, well-being, and physical/emotional safety. If they often have to lift heavy items, for example, investing in a proper warehouse space and forklift training could be the solution. On the other hand, simply investing in ergonomic office furniture will prevent your team from coming home with posture related injuries or even a touch of repetitive strain

Mental health is important, too. Be sure to create team meetings to touch base on how people are feeling and what changes may need to be made for long-term success and happiness.

Ensure Hazards Are Managed Effectively

If your business works with hazardous materials, for example, a junk removal company like JunkMD in San Diego, be sure to follow any and all safety tips. This will not only ensure that your business is running smoothly, but will create a better team culture as everyone involved in the day-to-day operations will know they’re taken care of and looked out for.

If your company does lab testing or refines their product through in-house methods, you need to store these items safely every single time. From a bottle of DMHA Octodrine Solution or cans of gasoline, to simple batteries for the fire alarm, always take a proper inventory and invest in storage solutions that can handle and store these items appropriately.

Keep Data Safe at All Times

Take proper measures to avoid getting hacked (security software, hiring someone to vet your systems, and not clicking on any suspicious links, emails, etc.). When it comes to systems that your business uses, be sure that only those with the correct keys can access (and limit that number of people as much as possible). Make sure you put correct verification processes in place. No one should be able to just tap in a password that might work and get into your entire company network!

Whether you’re just starting your business or have been in operation for several years, ensuring that you follow these business safety tips will help to avoid issues both now and in the future.
