Many of us dream of having the perfect home. . . but we don’t always know how to make that happen. Rather than letting our wishes get lost in our everyday obligations, to-dos, and task lists, we can focus on creating the home of our dreams instead!
Whether we get our dream home through renovations, saving for the right space in the future, or simply reframing our thoughts about where we are right now, here are some ideas to help you love where you live (and the people you share the space with!).
1. Renovate Your Existing Home
First thing’s first: You always have the option of renovating your home as it is now. If you know that you already live in an area that you really like, and there’s a lot of potential in the plot that you’re on, you can look at completely redoing your home so that it becomes the home of your dreams. This can often involve extending or converting different spaces, so you’ll need to make sure that you actually can do that and get the permits first.
If you don’t necessarily have the space to expand, extend, or completely restructure your space, you can also focus on one small area at a time. For example, renovate your kitchen to make it more modern or even something as simple as upgrading your couch can make all the difference!
2. Look to Purchase a New Home
If it’s in the budget, if you don’t have the option of renovating your current place, or if you’ve just been itching to make a change to your living space, you do have the option of purchasing a new home.
Remember, even if the new purchase isn’t the dream home (yet!), it can be a stepping stone to getting where you want to be. You can consider buying a brand new home that has just been built, which has everything that you need. You could look at buying something slightly older that has a lot of potential and could become your dream home through renovating it over time. Or, you can purchase something smaller to save money while saving for the future! You have options, here, so don’t get discouraged!
3. Consider a Self-Build Project
You also have the option of building your own home. If you have very specific ideas of what you’re looking for, then working with an architect to draw up plans and finding the right plot to build it on could be exactly what you need. For this, you will also need to find specialist contractors, such as DRG Construction Group, who can bring your vision to life. This way, you’ll be able to build your dream home from scratch and make it exactly how you want it to be.
4. Think About Knocking Down and Starting Over
With that in mind, you could also think about knocking down your existing home and start from scratch. This will require a bit of finances, but it can be a great way to take your purchased plot of land and make it more aligned to your long-term goals. First, you need to ensure that you have permission to do this (check in with your HOA, city, and local government first!), and also ensure that you have the potential (mental/emotional bandwidth, finances, and resources) to create exactly what you’re looking for.
5. Contemplate Relocating for Your Dream Home and Life
Oftentimes, we look to make changes to our homes or to purchase somewhere new to live because we are aspiring to something more, and we want to ensure that our homes work with our lifestyle. In some cases, this may mean relocating.
Perhaps you’re not happy where you are, or there could be a different area that would offer you a better quality of life and more property for your money. It may even be overseas! So, don’t discount this option, either, as it could allow you to get your dream home and life.
Wherever you go or whatever steps you take, know that where you live is so important for building you and your family’s future. It may take a little bit longer than anticipated to get there, but the journey is just as exciting as the final result!
